The University Campus

As a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, your day-to-day university life will mainly take place on the “Vaihingen Campus”. This is where many of the faculties in the fields of natural sciences and engineering are based.

In addition to the campus in Vaihingen, there is also a ‘City Centre Campus’. As a few engineering and natural science departments are also based in the city centre, you may occasionally have lectures and even exams there. Many optional modules in the humanities, social sciences and languages are also held in the city centre. It is therefore important to be able to find your way around both campuses to a basic extent.

Finding a lecture room

All rooms and lecture theatres at the University of Stuttgart are numbered using the following system:

Nummernschema als Grafik

The letter at the start of the designation indicates the campus: Vaihingen or City centre.

The first number is the building number. This corresponds to the house number, though unfortunately it is not clear which street is meant. This is particularly relevant in the City Centre university area, as the buildings here are spread across various streets. That’s why there’s a lecture theatre directory here, which also lists the official address. Alternatively, you can visit the department’s website or pop into the department office; we’ll of course be happy to help you in such cases.

If the building number is followed by a two-digit number, this is the lecture theatre number within the building (e.g. V 53.01, V 9.01, etc.). A leading 0 indicates the ground floor, a 1 the first floor, and so on. Lecture theatre V 9.01 is therefore located on the ground floor at Pfaffenwaldring 9, whilst V 9.11 is a lecture theatre on the first floor of the same building.

If two numbers follow, the room is not a lecture theatre but an office, a seminar room, etc. However, the same principle applies with regard to the floor and the room number. Take, for example, our department room, which is numbered V 9.0.166.

You can also find a clear overview of all the buildings on the university’s interactive map.
